Fall 2011 Grant Recipients

Literacy Centers

Funded to Beth Driessen, Lomira Elementary

Literacy has been an initiative for Lomira for the past couple years.  I would like to improve my literacy block by incorporating more hands-on material for student use.  The materials will be used as the students rotate through 8 literacy centers per week.  The children are provided with whole group and small group instruction that is supported by small group practice in literacy centers.  These centers are based on a variety of literacy concepts.  Literacy centers focus on letter recognition, letter and sound correspondence, beginning, middle, and ending sound identification, word families, sight words, guided reading, and more.  My goal is for each center to focus on a specific leteracy area in which the materials to practice with change to support the intended area of growth.

Enhancement of Literature Program

Funded to William Vilski, St. John's Lutheran School

I wish to enhance the critical thinking skills of the 7th and 8th grade students at St. John's by using a literature-based, novel approach program to the literature and reading component of the curriculum.  This grant will allow me to purchase and implement a wider range of classical and contemporary novel models for study.

Smart Document Camera

Funded to Eric Schalk and JoAnn Rodriguez, Lomira Elementary

In today's ever changing educational landscape, schools are always on the lookout for better and more innovative ways to educate the tech-savvy students who will be the leaders of tomorrow.  One way to achieve this is through the use of technology in order to hold interest and more efficiently educate this generation of students.  A document camera is a cost effective and approproate way to achieve this end.  This interactive and flexible technology will aid educators in attaining this goal.
